“It was the tactile experience that truly elevated my wine drinking.”

André Hueston Mack brings fresh energy to the wine world. We spoke with the sommelier and winemaker about Frasier, hip-hop, and the glass that changed everything.

From Finance to Fine Wine

André Mack's extraordinary journey from the structured world of finance to the vibrant realm of fine wine is a narrative as rich and layered as the wines he creates. Born with an innate curiosity and a blend of influences from hip-hop to skateboarding, Mack has transformed his varied interests into a celebrated career as a sommelier, restaurateur, author, media personality, and wine grower.

Mack's early fascination with wine began in the most unexpected of places: watching the popular sitcom "Frasier." Captivated by the characters' deep appreciation for wine, he left behind a budding career in finance to rediscover himself in the culinary world. This decision led him to the prestigious restaurant, The French Laundry in California, a move that underscored his commitment and natural talent for the art of wine.

His approach to this sophisticated art form is refreshing in its simplicity and accessibility. With a knack for breaking down complex concepts using relatable pop culture analogies, Mack has opened the world of wine to a broader audience. This philosophy is embodied in Maison Noir Wines, a brand infused with the spirit of hip-hop and punk rock, a bold departure from traditional wine branding. The unconventional labels capture the essence of his unique journey, appealing to a younger, vibrant demographic eager to embrace sophistication without the pretentiousness.

During his time at Thomas Keller's esteemed establishments, Mack cultivated a deep respect for quality, collaboration, and the human connections forged in kitchens and dining rooms.

“I learned to garner the respect of the person I worked side-by-side with. If I could impress them, then anyone who walked through the front doors would be blown away.”

This ethos is evident in "99 Bottles: A Black Sheep's Guide to Life-Changing Wines," his book that invites readers into the wine world through a lens of inclusivity and warmth.

His restaurant in Brooklyn “& Sons Ham Bar” exemplifies this vision by offering exceptional quality in a relaxed, welcoming setting where pretenses are left at the door. This spirit of openness is further captured in his work with Bon Appétit's "World of Wine" series, where he reaches out to new audiences, demystifying the complexities of wine and making it accessible to all.

“My goal has always been to make wine feel more inviting and less about all the pomp and circumstance.”

Mack's carefully curated wine lists have earned acclaim, demonstrating his deep understanding of the balance between tradition and innovation. His remarkable achievements were marked by winning the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Young Sommeliers Competition in 2003, which was a pivotal moment that solidified his dedication to his craft. "That achievement lit a fire in me. I dug my heels in and became hyper-focused on honing my craft." His advice to aspiring sommeliers is simple, "Push yourself to be a little better every day. Most of success comes down to one thing, showing up consistently."

A revelation came with his discovery of Josephinenhütte stemware, where the elegance and precision of the glass transformed his wine experience. For Mack, this seamless wine delivery became an essential part of his ritual, embodying the blend of artistry and enjoyment he champions.
